Here is another super easy hidden compartment, Mary Poppin's inspired, box.
Using a large box, smaller box, fabric, hot glue, and an Exacto knife, you can put together a quick lesson or story at a moments notice. I say "a moment's notice" because I was asked to fill in for a teacher on a Sunday morning and this was the perfect go-to to save the day. With about an hour to prepare, I knew I needed this box!
I quickly wrote the words to the memory verse in large letters on separate sheets of card stock. I also wrote the words on separate slips of paper and taped them to several smaller boxes I had on hand. I placed them inside the hidden compartment box to be pulled out for a game to arrange in the correct order. Note: You can unscramble the boxes or you can have the kids hold the boxes and unscramble the kids. Both ways are fun! And of course, candy or snacks is always a plus. While you're pulling out the boxes, pull out a bag of chocolate to share. "Now, how did that get in there?"
Cut a hole in the top of the larger box and glue the fabric to the box, leaving the opening to center the smaller box over. Make the hole large enough to pull items out of.
Cut a hole in the bottom of the smaller box, glue fabric to the box, center the two holes and hot glue it together.
And that's it!
Surprisingly, there's really no age limit when it comes to using this box. We were asked to speak to the youth group (high school age kids!) and we used it in an object lesson. Of course they knew what I was doing but they loved it just the same and we had their undivided attention. Even had some kids come up to us afterwards to see it and tell us how much they enjoyed the service! And if there's ever any doubt, make sure you have chocolate!
