MEMORY VERSE GAME / SKIT

Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Character: villain dressed like a robber with a simple eye mask—not scary

Items needed:

  • memory verse on display
  • black cardboard pieces large enough to cover each word in the memory verse
  • villain/robber costume

Go over the memory verse a few times to give the kids time to memorize it.

Villain comes in while kids are learning the memory verse. He doesn’t want the kids to learn it, so he covers up a word each time they say it. After all the words are covered up, he realizes he couldn’t stop the kids from hiding the Word in their heart. He drops his shoulders in defeat and exits.

The kids saw through what the villain (the enemy) was trying to do, but it was too late! The Word was already sown in their hearts.

SUPER HERO LESSON

Ask the kids who their favorite superhero is and what is their superpower (sample list below).

  • Hulk Strong             Can leap long distances. Tear up stuff. Body heals fast.
  • Captain America    Strong. Runs fast. Smart. Indestructible shield and can be thrown as a weapon.
  • Ironman                   Powerful iron suit that can fly.
  • Hawkeye                  Shoots arrows that blow up things.
  • Spiderman               Shoots webs from his wrists. Has grips on his fingers to climb walls.
  • Elastagirl                  Body can stretch.
  • Mr. Incredible          Super strong.
  • Violet                         Invisible and can make a protective force shield.
  • Dash                          Super speed.

All of these superheroes have special powers to help save the world. But wouldn’t it be awesome if we were like superheroes that had special powers? Did you know that we do? We may not be able to fly or shoot webs out of our hands, but God did give us special powers.

BOLDNESS. He gives us boldness to tell people about Jesus. To invite people to church. To pray for people.

Do you know what else superheroes do that we can do?

SERVE. Superheroes took big risks to help and serve the people around them. We can do that, too. Maybe there’s a new kid at school that needs help finding his way around. Or someone just needs a friend or someone to be nice to them. If you ask God, He will show you ways to serve other people. When you do this, you can even imagine being a superhero serving mankind and helping to save the world.

And the Superheroes did something else...

They used TEAMWORK. The Avengers teamed up to help each other fight the bad guys. And the Incredibles – they were a family that worked together and helped each other. In our lives, we need teamwork. Think about baseball, basketball, cheerleading, and football. We all need to help each other to win. Even at church we need to help each other. God has given each of us special gifts and talents to help each other at church, at school and everywhere we go. And what are we doing? Helping to save the world! Helping people get born again. Helping them to know the Greatest Superhero that ever lived! Jesus!

JESUS, my Superhero

  • Stood up against the devil and defeated him.
  • He stood up against temptation.
  • When there was a really bad storm – He wasn’t afraid. He was asleep until His disciples woke Him up. He just stood up and told that storm to be still. And it did.

Superheroes help save the world by fighting enemies over and over again. But Jesus is the most awesome Superhero ever because He defeated the enemy once and for all!

Let the kids decorate their own superhero masks to wear during service. For those that didn't get to dress up, this is a fun way for them to have a costume. You may want to do this at the beginning of class in case some kids didn’t have a costume to wear.
