MEMORY VERSE
2 Timothy 1:7, For God has not given us a spirit of FEAR, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
SKIT
Teacher: I invited someone really cool to class this morning. I’m not sure when he will be here but we’ll go ahead and get started.
2 Timothy 1:7, For God has not given us a spirit of FEAR, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
The Bible tells us that God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear. So, if it doesn’t come from God, then where does it come from?
Spirit Man: (bursts through the door loudly; teacher screams) NEVER FEAR...SPIRIT MAN IS HERE!
Teacher: Do you always enter a room like that?
Spirit Man: YES! But...NEVER FEAR...SPIRIT MAN IS HERE!
Teacher: I’m glad you could make it. Kids, this is the really cool someone I was telling you about. Spirit Man, I like that thing you just said about "never fear".
Spirit Man: You must mean…NEVER FEAR! SPIRIT MAN IS HERE!
Teacher: Right! That thing! We were just reading 2 Timothy 1:7 and I was really hoping you could help us out about not being in fear.
Spirit Man: I am here to serve! (stands in a super hero stance)
Teacher: We've all had times when something has REALLY scared us. I mean, you kind of scared me when you burst through the door. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Since fear doesn't come from God, where does it come from?
Spirit Man: To answer that, we need to go all the way back to the beginning. Remember the story of Adam and Eve? They were in the Garden of Eden enjoying everything that God had provided for them. Love, peace, joy and everything else they could ever want. BUT...THEN...the devil came disguised as a serpent and caused them to doubt what God had said about not eating from the tree of good and evil. So, Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the fruit of the forbidden tree. Shortly after that, the Bible says that Adam heard God’s voice in the garden and that “he was afraid”. That’s the first time fear is mentioned in the Bible.
Teacher: So, fear comes from the devil?
Spirit Man: That’s right. There was no fear in the garden until the devil showed up.
Teacher: What can we do to guard against fear?
Spirit Man: Romans 12:2 tells us to renew our minds to the Word of God. When we know what God’s Word says, fear will have no place in our lives.
Teacher: Rest assured that we are going to renew our minds to the Word of God AND watch out for fear now that we know where it comes from. Thank you for coming today, Spirit Man.
Spirit Man: I’m just doing my duty...and remember...NEVER FEAR...SPIRIT MAN IS HERE...wait, I’m leaving so I can’t be HERE so …NEVER FEAR! SPIRIT MAN IS...um…NEAR! (exits)

OBJECT LESSON
Items needed:
(put a pair of safety goggles on or use a volunteer)
Who can tell me what these are for? (allow time for answers) Safety goggles protect our eyes from anything getting in them. Workers wear these to keep objects from getting in their eyes while they are working.
(put motorcycle goggles on) What are these for? Motorcycle riders wear these to keep bugs from flying in their eyes while they are riding.
(put water goggles on) What are these for? Water goggles keep water from getting in your eyes.
There are all types of goggles but there’s one type that we need to wear all the time! It’s our spiritual goggles! (put them on)
Our eyes are like windows. It’s important that we look at the right things because what we look at will affect our thought life.
What would happen if you watched a television show where the kids were disrespectful to their parents? It would give you the idea that it was alright to talk that way to YOUR parents.
What would happen if you watched a scary movie? Thoughts of fear would come in.
Psalm 101:3 (NKJV), I will set nothing wicked before my eyes.
We need to keep our spiritual goggles on all time so we don’t let the wrong things come in through these windows. (point at your goggles)
We wouldn’t leave the door to our house open all the time. Who knows what might come in! So, let’s also protect our eyes from letting the wrong things come in!
